Would this be considered as an 'alternate universe' fan-film of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? Since Discord has been reformed in Season 3. Or does is this happen between seasons 2 and 3? And how many words for this film do you have right now?
Journey of the Spark takes place in-between Seasons 2 and 3 of the Friendship is Magic continuity.
The film takes place just a few months after “A Canterlot Wedding” and tries to piece together events from the show that will not only lead into “The Crystal Empire” but “Keep Calm and Flutter On” and eventually Twilight’s growth as portrayed in “Magical Mystery Cure”
That’s not to say that it isn’t without its own original twists as the movie completely strives off of making itself a stand-alone story that anybody not familiar with Equestria and its history can jump straight into.
It's great to know that Hasbro is cool with the movie in spirit, at least. But what kinds of things WOULDN'T they want to see in the movie without taking legal action?
Well firstly, they don’t want another Fighting is Magic scenario happening. People who ask if we’re gonna put the movie on DVD or Blu-Ray have been denied this so many times because that’s already a red flag. That’s pretty much illegally distributing a copyrighted work.
The same thing goes for Film Festivals or events outside of fan-community run events like Conventions and stuff like that. We’re specifically a non-profit group that can only release the film online or at conventions pertaining to the fandom. But I have plans to show the film to close family members and non-MLP fans alike despite the limitations.
But initially, they just don’t want an over PG rated film with a lot of dark subtext and violence. We try to keep the rating PG at best because of the scary sequences and dark context of the story.

Did Kira Buckland at first wish she could've voiced Twilight Sparkle again after Double Sonic Rainboom, until she auditioned for the role of Candance?
If I remember correctly, around the time that I met Meredith and we started casting Journey of the Spark, Double Rainboom actually had not gotten its final cast yet. Believe it or not, a little fun fact, Meredith was actually a candidate for the voice of Twilight Sparkle in Double Rainboom as she had recorded some audition lines when she was vacationing down in California last summer.
In the end, Meredith didn’t get the part (she got another role instead), but we were still working together to cast the rest of Journey and that’s when she recommended Kira to me for Cadance.
