Do you think that in Longest Brawl, Ness will always see himself as "just Ness" when in fact, he'll realize later on that he's the key to bringing the Nintendo worlds back together again after the tragedy that befalls upon them?
Not necessarily. The movie focuses less on Ness being a savior of the realms as it does on Ness’ journey in finding a family that sticks with him. That’s the core concept of the movie: finding a family through the friends you make.
Since the movie is mostly a comedy, we wanted to avoid the most basic story conventions. Ness isn’t treated like a chosen one or a savior. He’s more or less just a kid who chooses to get involved because he understands what’s at stake. So being the good-hearted person that he is, he chooses to help not because it was foretold he would, but he because he knows that its right.
For the Longest Brawl, do you plan for it to be a sequel in the Super Smash Bros series, supposedly after the events of Brawl in Subspace Embassy?
Longest Brawl isn’t related to Subspace Emissary in any way. The key reason Longest Brawl came into existence was that I was always disappointed that Subspace Emissary never really had a coherent idea that allowed all of these wonderful characters to come together. They just sorta did.
What sets Longest Brawl apart is that we created an original story that allowed all of the different Nintendo worlds to come together and have an actual crossover, sort of on the level of The Avengers. Its very much an origin story.
Regarding the Longest Brawl, will Journey of the Spark be completed before commencing work on the next movie, or will they be in production concurrently? If the latter, will resources be taken away from Journey of the Spark such that it would extend the length of time until completion?
Since we’re planning on spending much more time on the development for Longest Brawl, I would probably say that the production of both movies are scheduled well enough with one another so that no resources will be taken away from Journey of the Spark.
We plan to develop Longest Brawl enough so that when we’re ready to go, Journey of the Spark will be in post-production. Currently right now, the focus for Longest Brawl is writing the script, casting, and then spending a lot of time developing the artwork and visual style of the movie.
Nearly all of those things will take long enough to go into next year.
so like you have VAs for the other characters but will they remain dialogue-less or will they have full on speeches etc? you know what i mean? like olimar doesnt really talk so are you gonna actually have him talk? or like espeon will espeon be like "sup homies lets do this shit"
Most of the characters are going to have full on speech. But in the ways that we manage to get some of the characters to talk is the fun part for us as we came up with some creative ways for having them speak.
Though Kirby is one of the few that probably will remain silent like how he is in the games.
Oh, questions, questions. Here's three: Why did you pick Ness as the main character? Who are those four VAs playing? And why are the other five heroes under wraps, if that's your game?
I can answer all three of these!
Ness was chosen as the main character because he had a lot of potential to push forward the concept of the movie. While many of the other Nintendo characters have gotten their time to shine, Ness has only ever had one game that was, sadly, a flop when it first released. So we felt it would help take the story in really interesting places if we explored the possibilities of him being a forgotten hero thrust into an adventure where he learns his strengths through the characters he teams up with.
For the four VA’s, I can confirm who’s voicing the following characters:
- Hayley Nelson - Espeon (Pokemon series)
- Nicholas Parker - Captain Olimar (Pikmin series)
- Reagan Murdock - Greninja (Pokemon series)
- Sheila M. Gagne - Rosalina (Mario series)
As for who the other five heroes are, four of them are the ones I just revealed! The last remaining hero that joins Ness on his adventure is none other than Kirby!
