I'd imagine that something as dark and edgy as the Changeling Empire would be the last thing any viewer unfamiliar with FiM would expect. So I feel I should ask: as a filmmaker, what was your intention to use this setting for your opening scene?

Good question! One of the key problems we had with the original script was that the story took way too long to introduce the villains. It was a situation in which the overall tone of the film wasn’t really balanced and by the time that the villains came forward into the spotlight, everything just felt off. The shift in tones between the light and dark suffered too much from whiplash.

For me, introducing the Changeling Empire as the basis for the opening not only helped introduce the villains within the first 5 minutes, but it was a great way for us to sell the overall tone of the film. To us, it was a way for us to say “yes, this movie is gonna be something much darker and a little more intimidating” and it was that kind of mindset that I took when wanting to use it as the key introduction to what makes the film so unique.
