The movie focuses less on Ness being a savior of the realms as it does on Ness’ journey in finding a family that sticks with him. That’s the core concept of the movie: finding a family through the friends you make.
Since the movie is mostly a comedy, we wanted to avoid the most basic story conventions. Ness isn’t treated like a chosen one or a savior. He’s more or less just a kid who chooses to get involved because he understands what’s at stake. So being the good-hearted person that he is, he chooses to help not because it was foretold he would, but he because he knows that its right.
